How to Delete Your Grindr Account Permanently (and Make It Stick)

By Ben — Founder of Groundr6 min read

First, the thing most people get wrong: uninstalling Grindr does not delete your account. Your profile, your photos, your conversations and your location history stay live on Grindr's servers, visible in the grid, waiting. Reinstalling puts everything back in under a minute, which is exactly why so many "I quit" attempts last four days.

This guide covers the real deletion, step by step on iPhone and Android, the subscription trap that keeps charging people after they delete, what happens to your data, and, since you're presumably deleting for a reason, how to make sure the deletion actually holds.

Before you delete anything: cancel your subscription first

If you pay for Grindr XTRA or Unlimited, deleting your account does not cancel your subscription. Subscriptions are billed by Apple or Google, not by Grindr, so the billing continues even after your profile is gone. People have paid for months of an app they no longer had. Cancel first:

On iPhone: Settings, tap your name, Subscriptions, Grindr, Cancel Subscription.

On Android: Play Store, profile icon, Payments and subscriptions, Subscriptions, Grindr, Cancel.

Wait for the confirmation email, then proceed.

How to delete your Grindr account on iPhone

1. Open Grindr and tap your profile picture in the top-left corner.

2. Scroll to the bottom and tap the Settings gear.

3. Scroll all the way down and tap Delete Profile.

4. Grindr will ask why you're leaving. Pick a reason (any reason, you don't owe them an essay).

5. Confirm. You may be asked to verify your email address.

6. Once confirmed, the account is permanently deleted. Now uninstall the app.

How to delete your Grindr account on Android

1. Open Grindr and tap your profile picture.

2. Tap the Settings gear in the corner.

3. Scroll down and tap Deactivate, then choose Delete Account.

4. Select a reason for leaving, add feedback if you want (optional).

5. Verify your email if asked, then tap Delete Profile to confirm.

6. Uninstall the app.

What happens to your data after deletion

Deletion is permanent and immediate from your side: your profile disappears from the grid, your conversations vanish for the people you talked to, and you cannot recover the account later. Per Grindr's privacy policy, some data is retained for a limited period for legal and safety reasons before being deleted or anonymized, but your public presence ends the moment you confirm.

Two details worth knowing. If you signed up with a third-party login (Apple, Google or Facebook), you can also revoke Grindr's access in that account's settings. And screenshots other people took of your profile or chats are, unfortunately, theirs forever, which is true of every app and a good argument for deleting sooner rather than later.

Note that Grindr also auto-deletes accounts with no login activity for two years, but two years of "trying not to look" is not a strategy. Do it deliberately.

Why deleting the account is the easy part

Here's what the step-by-step guides on other sites won't tell you: the deletion takes ninety seconds, and it is not the hard part. The hard part arrives three to ten days later, on a slow evening, when the urge that used to be answered by the grid comes back and finds nothing. 73% of users have deleted and reinstalled at least once. The cycle is so common we wrote a whole article about why you keep deleting and reinstalling.

The reason is simple: deleting the account removes the app, but not the habit loop that was driving it. If Grindr was how you handled boredom, loneliness or anxiety, deleting it leaves those feelings without their usual exit, and your brain knows exactly where the exit used to be. A new account takes twenty minutes to build, and at 11pm on a bad Tuesday, twenty minutes of friction may not be enough on its own.

How to make the deletion stick

1. Block the reinstall path. This is the single highest-leverage move. A blocker like Groundr works at the system level on iOS and Android: when your thumb wanders toward the App Store at 11pm, it hits a pause screen, a breathing exercise, and the reasons you wrote down the day you deleted. Urges are spikes, not plateaus. Ninety seconds of resistance kills most of them.

2. Write down why you deleted, today. Right now, while the reasons are vivid. One sentence is enough. Future-you, mid-urge, will genuinely not remember, and reading your own words from a calmer moment is more persuasive than any willpower.

3. Know your danger hours. If you always opened the app in bed, the first week of nights is where the battle happens. Put something else there deliberately: a book, a podcast, your phone charging in another room. The urge is tied to the time and place, not just the app.

4. Treat a relapse as data, not a verdict. If you do reinstall, note what triggered it and delete again the same day. The cycle feeds on shame, not on the app itself.

Common questions

Can I recover a deleted Grindr account? No. Deletion is permanent. A new account starts from zero, which, if you're quitting, is a feature.

Does uninstalling the app delete my profile? No. Your profile stays visible in the grid until you delete the account from inside the app, or until two years of inactivity pass.

Will people know I deleted my account? There's no notification. Your profile and your side of conversations simply disappear.

Can I delete my account from a web browser? Grindr's account tools live in the app. If you've already uninstalled it, reinstall briefly, log in, delete the account properly, then uninstall again.

Do I lose my paid subscription immediately? You keep being billed until you cancel through Apple or Google. Cancel the subscription before deleting the account, always.
